West Bengal Board of Secondary Education

West Bengal Board of Secondary Education was established in 1951. It was brought into existence under an State Legislature Act  known as the West Bengal Secondary Education Act of 1950. Board started functioning under the Chairmanship of Sri Apurba Kumar Chanda and it was inaugurated by the then Governor of West Bengal on 3rd May 1951. Responsibility to regulate, control and develop secondary education of the State along with conducting the School Final Examination was entrusted to the Board. Before West Bengal Board of Secondary Education this was done by calcutta university of india. After many years, the Board was renamed as West Bengal Board of Secondary Education in 1964, under the West Bengal Board of Secondary Education Act 1963. It Head Office is situated at Park Street in Kolkata, India.

Since its inception it has extended its reach to the entire state at a phenomenal pace and the operations of West Bengal Board of Secondary Education have increased manifold over the years. In the year of 1951 the Board was started its journy with 1270 high schools, these schools were taken over from Calcutta University. Currently Board is handling around 10238 schools in West Bengol and nearly 8 lakhs examinees appeared in the Secondary Examination 2006. The administration of West Bengal Board of Secondary Education is run in a democratic and decentralized manner and all the Board members are elected from relevant constituencies. since 1989, the examination system has been entirely computerized and the Board is in the process of total computerization of works.
